2009 Preparedness Plan

February

(taken from Syracuse 6th Ward Plan)

Spiritual Goal:

Improve on your efforts to keep the Sabbath Day holy.

Pray as a family for missionary opportunities.

Emergency Preparedness Goal:

Place $20.00 in coin and small bills in your “cash stash”. You should have $40.00 now. Remember this is an emergency fund not an ATM. 72 Hour kit items: Prepare a sanitation kit.

1. Sanitation kit (porta potty)

2. Add extra paper products to your storage supply

3. Personal hygiene kits (comb, toothbrush, razor, shampoo, etc.)

4. Add a extra towel, wash cloth, cleaning supplies, and personal needs to your sanitation kit.

Food Storage Goal:

Grains – Store about 300 lbs. per person. This would include: Wheat, oats, rice, pasta, corn. 65% should be in whole grain form. An example of this would be: 200 lbs wheat, 50 lbs rice, 25 lbs oats, 25 lbs pasta. This gives variety to menus and personalizes it to your family’s needs.

Storage Inventory – To evaluate the adequacy of your home storage program, take a written inventory. Keep a sheet of paper and pencil near your storage area. Each time an item is removed or added, it should be recorded. When the sheet is filled, it can be used a shopping list to replenish the supply or bring the inventory up to date. Also, it can help you see how much of certain items you use so you can better see what your needs are.

Why Rotate Food Storage? - It is mandatory to rotate our food supply for these reasons: 1) to prevent food spoilage and to minimize loss of food value and flavor. 2) to keep our taste buds acquainted with the foods we someday may have to depend upon. The concept that a person will eat anything under emergency situations has proven faulty.

Shelve Life of Grains - There are 3 types of shelf-lifes. Open container (usually the shortest), Optimum (the shelf life with the best taste and nutritional value) and Life Sustaining (much longer than the optimum shelf life, most are around 30+ years). Shelf-life also depends on the containers used, humidity and oxygen absorbers or desiccants used and temperature stored.

Challenge: Prepare a Storage Inventory for your food storage.

Family Home Evening Activity: Prepare a FHE lesson on keeping the Sabbath Day holy. Come up with ideas, as a family, of things to do on Sunday.
